A Zero Waste Consumer
Sometimes people don’t know where to start when it comes to living a zero waste lifestyle. I get it, it feels unfamiliar and like a new commitment. But, coming from someone who recently started going zero waste, it’s not hard.
When I was beginning, I had to do a few Google searches to find out which products to use. I wanted to find products that were sustainable, well designed, and 100% biodegradable or compostable. Oh, and of course, REUSABLE. I feel these qualities define zero waste living.
This is a my everyday kit for going zero waste.
A Kit of Essential, Everyday Products for a Zero Waste Life
waste reduction + conscious design
Natural Bamboo Toothbrush (Individually Numbered) – Eco Friendly Bamboo, Biodegradable, BPA Free Bristles
By: WowE LifeStyle
A Conscious Alternative
Plastic toothbrushes suck. In addition to the majority of them not being made in a sustainable way, since you end up throwing out toothbrushes after 2 to 3 months of use, that plastic just sits in landfills and pollutes bodies of water. These eco-friendly, sustainable toothbrushes are made with bamboo, which means they’re biodegradable. You have to throw out toothbrushes eventually, so why not make sure they won’t stick around in the environment for thousands for years.
A Conscious Alternative
Every kitchen should have a compost bin. I quite honestly don’t see why you wouldn’t have one. They’re inexpensive (under $20) and take up little to no room in your kitchen. This is the one I recommend. It fits nicely on your counter and has a built-in, inner compartment so you don’t need to buy separate compost bags. You can put all your food waste and compostable paper products in here to reduce waste that would otherwise just go in your trashcan. It’s an essential for going zero waste.
Sustainable, Reusable Bamboo 5 Piece Utensil Set – 100% Biodegradable, Heat & Stain-resistant, Recycled Plastic Bottles Holder / Case
By: To-GoWare
A Conscious Alternative
I see a lot of people with these now. Which is great! Whenever you go out for picnics, hiking, or just want to take food on-the-go, PLEASE use these instead of plastic, disposable eating utensils. Plastic forks, knives and spoons also…suck. These are made from sustainable, durable bamboo and can be hand washed and reused for a while. They also look cool.
A Conscious Alternative
Pretty much any zero waste person will have reusable mason jars in their bags and home. They’re a go to zero waste product. You can use them for storage (i.e., to store your a snack or leftovers) and to carry a beverage. I like make a little yogurt snack with fruit and granola and store them in here.
Vacuum Insulated, Reusable Water Bottle (Durable BPA-Free Food Grade 18/8 Stainless Steel)
By: Glacier Point
A Conscious Alternative
Everyone has their reusable canteen that they use and like. I think these are the best. It’s stainless steel, vacuum insulated, and 100% BPA-free. I also really like the clean design.
Eco-Friendly, Recycled, Rusable Cotton Medium-Small Tote Bag (Made with Eco-Friendly, Sustainable Recycled Natural Cotton)
By: Cognitive Surplus
A Conscious Alternative
This isn’t the tote bag that I use, but it’s pretty cool — and punny (get it?!). I think it’s rare to find a tote bag made this sustainably. It’s made from 100% recycled, natural cotton. I like to keep bags like this in my purse and store my fruits and vegetables in them, for whenever I go shopping to the grocery market or farmers marker. You can also just throw it in the wash if it gets dirty. Totes are another must for going zero waste. Plastic bags…not good.
Eco-Friendly, Reusable Large Dish Towels (Natural Bamboo, Viscose Fibers) – 100% Compostable
By: Pacific Dry Goods
A Conscious Alternative
Now this is a product you might not often see in a zero waste kit, but I think it’s super useful. Instead of wasting and throwing out tons of paper napkins in your kitchen (or even when you go out for a picnic), try using eco friendly, reusable hand towels or napkins. They’ll get the job done and you won’t need to waste money and produce new waste using paper napkins. What’s great about this product in particular is that it’s made from sustainable bamboo fabric (i.e., Viscose). Just another thing to help you go zero waste.

Waste is something that everyone is exposed to at some point or another. And now there’s way too much of it! So much of the waste we see can either be recycled, or doesn’t need to be there at all. It’s so easy to switch to a zero waste lifestyle. I wanted to share my must have kit for going zero waste to change a few people’s minds and make the transition to zero waste living as easy and seamless as possible. Hopefully I did! 🙂
