Below is a hand-picked selection of the top vegan protein powders and shakes. Many of the selected products are made with certified organic ingredients, without dyes and artificial flavors, and are gluten-free. These protein powders are also highly rated for both quality and taste by consumers. Many of these brands also share in our commitment towards environmentally and socially responsible practices and voice honorable beliefs in doing what’s right for not only the people, but the planet. Companies such as Orgain, Vega, and MRM give back to the community, either through donating their time and expertise to help those in need or by giving their products to less fortunate groups who need sustenance. It’s easy to be healthy, while doing what’s right!
We tasted and reviewed each of these products to give you a better sense of what to expect and so you can make an informed decision about which one to buy. Of course, we probably don’t have the same exact taste preferences as you, but we figured if we both taste and review these products and then average out our scores, you’ll get a more rounded opinion — so that’s what we did 🙂 Here’s some important information about our review and ratings that you should read before exploring:
1) The metrics under the “Taste & Quality” section are a reflection of our opinion. You may agree with us, you may not. There was no research done, we simply used the power of our palate. Each powder was mixed in a glass of water; we didn’t use any kind of juice to change the flavor.
2) The metrics under the “Health & Ingredients” section do follow an established criteria, but the criteria is based on research we’ve conducted and may not reflect the opinion of medical professionals. Products were scored well with respect to the “Ingredients” category when the shake had a diverse assortment of fruits and veggies (in addition to a plant protein blend), and/or the shake had an ingredients list that was made primarily with certified organic or natural ingredients. We tried to exclude vegan proteins that had artificial ingredients and added sweeteners. In terms of the “Macronutrients” (a.k.a. macros) category, we favored a nutritional profile that fit our active lifestyle and physicality. We looked for 19-22g of Protein, 1-5g of Carbs, 0-2.5g of Fat, and 90-120 Calories per serving. You can learn more about how to determine these levels for yourself via this page.
3) In the end, we found that these products overall are rather similar. There weren’t any that were egregiously bad tasting or that tasted like the best thing we’ve ever had. Moreover, we came to see that the ingredients and macros for these products are rather similar as well. Each has slight variations, but no one strays so far outside what you’d imagine for a vegan, plant-based protein blend.

Top 10 Vegan, Plant-Based Protein Shakes
(Taste Test & Review)
ORGANIC, GLUTEN-FREE, VEGAN, LOCAL
Complete Protein, Multisource Vegan Plant-based Protein Blend – Non-GMO, Gluten-free, NO Artificial Flavors
By: Vega
All Around Favorite
We were both happiest with the overall taste, consistency, and nutritional profile of this vegan protein powder by Vega (i.e., the ‘protein + greens’ one specifically). Vega also makes a series of performance protein powders and a meal-replacement smoothie (Vega One), but this one seems to be the best of both worlds. It’s not too filling and incorporates 2 servings of veggies per scoop. Also, we prefer the vanilla flavor over the chocolate. Apologizes chocolate lovers.

Vegan, Organic Plant-Based Protein Powder (Chocolate) – Gluten-Free, Soy-Free, No Sugar Added
By: Orgain
Best Seller
Although we wouldn’t say this one was our overall favorite, it’s a solid choice and — according to Amazon — it’s a “Best Seller”. It’s received just about 4,000 reviews and has a 4.5/5 star rating. Take this as you will, but the reason we didn’t give it that top spot was for its 5 grams of Sugar Alcohols. This ingredient may be fine with some people, but we know from experience that it doesn’t sit well with our stomach.

Vegan, Organic Protein Superfood Drink Mix (Chocolate Peanut Butter) – Gluten-Free, No Sugar Added
By: Amazing Grass
Great Ingredients, Odd Flavor
Perhaps this was our fault for trying the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor — as one can imagine that a plant-based, veggie protein shake probably tastes a bit funky with peanut flour — but we were generally happy with the nutritional profile and chosen ingredients. This shake in particular has an assortment of fruits and veggies, which is rare in a lean protein product. That being said, it does have 7g of Fat, which caused it to lose a couple points given our desired criteria.

Vegan, Non-GMO Complete Performance Protein (Chocolate Mocha) – Gluten-free, No Artificial Sweeteners & Flavors
By: MRM Veggie Elite
Performance Protein
This product has a nice, smooth flavor to it, but truly is more of a performance protein powder; this is demonstrated in both the ingredients list and macros (i.e., macronutrients). It has the highest protein to fat ratio of any of the vegan proteins we surveyed and higher levels of sodium and potassium for recovery. The ingredients are standard for a performance protein (no addition of ‘greens’), and the product is not certified organic. You’ll also notice several “gum” ingredients, which you read about here; these fibrous ingredients are derived from the seeds of certain plants and tend to have a laxative effect. Given our criteria, this lost it some points.

Voted Best-Tasting Vegan Protein Powder (25+ Superfoods, Cocoa) – Non-GMO, Soy-Free, No Artificial Ingredients
By: Yuve
Up & Coming
You may not see Yuve in your local health store, but we’re assuming you will soon. Apparently, Yuve was voted the “Best Tasting Vegan Protein Powder” — and although we couldn’t the data to substantiate this claim — we were pretty big fans of its taste and flavor. In term of its nutritional profile, we feel this would be a near perfect snack-time shake, or a great shake for someone who’s often on the go. Why? It has a relatively lower (but still sufficient) amount of protein and relatively higher amount of carbs per serving. We were super happy with the ingredients list. It boasts a 25+ superfood mixture, and it does deliver. The product includes goji beffiers, flax seeds, chia seeds, acai betteis, and other so-called superfoods.

Probiotic Plant Protein Powder, Organic, Vegan with Real Food Ingredients
By: Pure Food Company
The Naturalist
Although the ingredients and nutritional facts are great, we felt the taste was a bit too ‘raw’ (is perhaps the right word). It tastes very healthy 🙂 But seriously, it’s an overall solid vegan protein, and it’s a significant plus that it has an added probiotic.

100% Non-GMO Pea Protein Isolate from North American Farms
By: NAKED Nutrition
Peas, That’s It
This product markets itself as ‘NAKED’, and it pretty much is. Everything from the design of the packaging to the one ingredient (i.e., pea protein isolate) conveys this message. As mentioned, we mixed all these vegan protein powders with water, which perhaps wasn’t the best idea for this shake in particular, but nonetheless we were able to experience the true pea flavor. It pretty much tastes like if you were to ground up peas into a flour and mix it with water…not much to it. The macros on this product are stellar, however; it has 27 grams of protein and 0.5 grams of fat per serving. It’s hard to rate a protein that’s just peas, but we gave it a relatively high score as there’s nothing bad to really say about it.

Warrior Blend, Organic, Raw Plant-Based Protein (Natural) – Gluten-Free, Soy-Free
By: Sunwarrior
The Warrior
This is a classic vegan, plant-based protein powder. Overall, it has a healthy assortment of plant proteins, a clean ingredients list, and agreeable macros. We tried the “Natural” flavor, and although it wasn’t our favorite, we imagine the chocolate or vanilla flavor would be a bit more pleasing. We should say, if you’re ok with a raw, plant flavor then go for it.

Vegan, Organic Protein Powder (Vanilla) – Gluten-Free, Soy-Free
By: Raw Green Organics
The Underdog
On one of our previous trips to GNC, we saw this product on the shelf — which immediately stood out for its biodegradable packaging — but didn’t recognize it. Apparently, the product itself is relatively new. After exploring their website for a bit, it seems their take on plant-based protein is pretty standard (i.e., utilizing pea, hemp, and flax protein), but is a bit different in that they use locally sourced plants. Once again, the macros are good and the ingredients list is clean.

All-in-One Organic Nutritional Shake with Plant Based Protein (Vanilla) – Gluten-Free, Soy-Free
By: Healthy Skoop
Solid Choice
It’s important to note that this product markets itself as an ‘All-in-One Nutritional Shake” and “Meal Supplement”, which does not mean a meal replacement. It contains a bit more fruits and veggies than your average vegan protein shake. It utilizes a standard set of plant proteins (e.g., pea, hemp and brown rice) and has a nice addition of, “1 billion probiotic organisms plus 1 gram of prebiotic fiber”. In terms of taste, all the flavors balance out nicely, but it was a bit chalky.

Honorable Mentions
We’ll say right off the bat: we did not try the following three ‘honorable mentions’. The following three vegan proteins are highly reviewed on Amazon and several health and wellness blogs. We’re adding these because we wanted to include a few products that we didn’t have a chance to taste, but that are still healthy choices (nutritionally speaking) and are well-reviewed for taste and overall quality. Please let us know in the comments what you think of these three options — it’ll help us and anyone who isn’t happy with our 10 choices above.

This is exactly what I was looking for…an actual taste test!! So you guys said the Vega one was your favorite in the vanilla flavor?? Just wondering…
Thank you! Yeah, we had fun doing it 🙂 Yes, the Vega shake (vanilla flavor) was our favorite. If you try it, let us know what you think!
So good! Had to comment…
Thank you!
This is the most helpful thing ever!! Wish you included the ingredients list though
Thank you!! Definitely true – thank you for that recommendation. We’ll try to incorporate that the next time we make a kit like this. All ingredient lists should be available by clicking through to the page, though.
