An Interview with Modicum Skincare

I’m Monica Behan, and I am the creator and owner of Modicum Skin Care


What inspired the creation of your company, and when did it start?

I have always had a passionate interest in nutrition, natural healing and the power of plants and all their benefits. About 5 years ago I had an accident that left some scarring and that was when my research became relentless. At that point I was propelled to create a skin care line that was plant based and harnessed all the power of nature. Why wouldn’t I take the same approach to my skin as how I eat for my body’s health.

What is your brand’s mission, and what causes drive you and your team?

I created a skin cell nutrient system which is very simple. The Essential Serum is really all you need. You feed your cells the nutrients they need and your body’s natural intelligence does the rest! Bottom line. We get sick if we don’t have the proper nutrition and so does the skin.

How is your brand socially responsible?

We use organic products that are sustainable farmed, we don’t use plastic, we are Vegan, cruelty free, we recycle and we do not use any harmful chemicals that compromise the endocrine system and immune system.

What does your brand do to lower its ecological impact and/or promote environmental health and well-being?

We buy from Local farmers whenever possible, we recycle and we manufacture here in America.

Does your company perform animal testing and/or use animal-based ingredients in your products? Why or why not?

No, absolutely not. My dog wouldn’t have it!

Where does your company make/manufacture your products, and why?

Here in America. We were just nominated last year by Matha Stewarts Editors for Made in America. We want to be a part of keeping jobs in our local community. There is a lot of poverty right here in our own back yards.

Describe your design philosophy – how do you balance quality and affordability?

That’s a tough one. Especially when you are not outsourcing to another county where the minimum wage is $1 an hour. Also when you use organic oils the price can be up to 10 times as non-organic, depending on the raw material. I am committed to high quality and beautiful aesthetics. For example my graphic designer Kelly agreed I could pay over time to get the branding to the standards and vision I had. I only marked the product price to be exactly what the cost of goods were in the standard equation for retail and didn’t add a penny. I set out to create a product that friends and family like myself could afford and would feel like they deserved a luxury they could afford when they put it on!

Tell us a little about the ingredients/materials you use. Generally, why did you pick them over other options?

As I mentioned I chose organic ingredients, usually with a farm I can have a relationship with directly whenever possible. I sought out botanicals that had the highest potency of the vitamins and minerals that the skin thrives on without contradictions. My favorite oils in the Essential serum are Sea Buckthorn berry oil and Helichrysum Italicum. Both are powerhouses and a address a myriad of skin issues

What are the next steps for your company?

To always continue researching and constantly obtain more knowledge. To continue to grow our sales and to become a household name while sustaining our personality as a brand of being kind to the environment, everyone we work with and helping people to feel good!

How do you view the future of conscious consumption?

The word is out and the information is there for everyone now that a plant based diet is the future of conscious consumption. In your body or on your skin.
