An Interview with Alibi Interiors
(Makers of Handmade, Locally-Sourced Reclaimed Wood Furniture & Decor)
We’re Chris and Paige Curtis. We build reclaimed wood home decor and are the couple behind the business of Alibi Interiors.
What inspired the creation of your company, and when did it start?
It was very organic – once we realized the hobby that started in our backyard was very quickly growing into a business, we both quit our jobs and put everything in to building Alibi Interiors.
What is your brand’s mission, and what causes drive you and your team?
Sustainability, recycling. We spend a lot of time at antique shops and flea markets, and realized that so much of what we already have in the world can be recycled and reused. Even material considered to be trash that is headed to the landfill (i.e. fence boards) can be re purposed into goods that inspire.
How is your brand socially responsible?
We hand-make all of our furniture in our warehouse in California, USA. We source wood materials from local shops and from our natural surroundings. We put care into everything we craft — you won’t find mass-produced, imported furniture here.
What does your brand do to lower its ecological impact and/or promote environmental health and well-being?
Alibi Interiors maintains a balance between the economy and the ecosystems. We re purpose old wood, keeping it out of landfills while recycling the material into handmade goods. Some of our products are made from the byproduct of other products (i.e. our succulent boxes are made from the waste of our frames), the wood we cannot use plus the sawdust created is brought home to our garden and yard to use as mulch. Our packaging materials are gathered from local retail shops, so the bubble wrap and boxes being used for our online orders are recycled as well!
Does your company perform animal testing and/or use animal-based ingredients in your products? Why or why not?
Nope. Just natural wood – no need for anything else.
Where does your company make/manufacture your products, and why?
Everything is hand made by us with the help of our four employees in Aptos, California. Our home is 1.5 miles away, reducing our travel time and hopefully, air pollution.
Describe your design philosophy – how do you balance quality and affordability?
We make simple yet quality products out of recycled materials, which allows us to keep our overhead down, and in turn helps to keep our prices affordable.
Tell us a little about the ingredients/materials you use. Generally, why did you pick them over other options?
Reclaimed redwood fence boards, reclaimed wood floor boards or other wood from local demolitions.
What are the next steps for your company?
Slow and steady wholesale growth and developing new products.
How do you view the future of conscious consumption?
Hopefully the bubbles of conscious consumption that are popping up globally, will continue to grow and spread awareness of the importance of sustainability. We like to think the future of environmental awareness and conscious consumption will be second nature to all of us.
As a parting sentiment, if you could only use one word to describe your brand ethos – what would it be?
Reclaim
