Kit by: Jake Madoff

Everyone has their own, unique morning routine. Sadly, it seems the brilliance of a morning routine is waning away as more people have to rush out for work and forgot to eat a healthy breakfast. And, I’ll say now, it’s not simply a saying that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ — it’s been proven by reputable scientific literature. According to a recent study, “breakfast eaters generally consumed more daily calories yet were less likely to be overweight”; furthermore, their evidence suggests that “breakfast consumption may improve cognitive function related to memory” (Rampersaud, 2005).
Now that you’re in the breakfast-eating mode, here’s my hand-selected kit with my go-to breakfast essentials. It’s a topic I get asked about rather often, so I figured I would make a kit and share it with you guys. My kit is geared towards a relatively healthy, vegan, plant-based breakfast eater and features one of my top picks for organic, vegan protein powders, a selection of whole food, organic vitamins that I use and love, my favorite on-the-go organic flaxseed oatmeal, and, last but not least, an awesome coffee brand that I found pretty recently that crafts Fair Trade, organic, and shade grown coffee bean blends.
If you have any questions, I’d be happy to answer them below — and, if you’d like, feel free to share your morning routine in the comments below, or upload your own healthy mourning routine so we can share it with the community!

Healthy Living Essentials: “A Healthy, Plant-based Morning Routine”
Organic & plant-based protein supplements & multivitamins
Complete Protein, Multisource Vegan Plant-based Protein Blend – Non-GMO, Gluten-free, NO Artificial Flavors
By: Vega
A Better Alternative
I probably go through one of these every 3 months or so. I tried a couple of the leading plant-based protein powders, and this one is definitely in my top three favorites. Vega uses a mix of pea, hemp and brown rice protein and–for this protein blend in particular–they incorporate kale, spinach, broccoli and alfalfa, which helps me to get the recommended daily serving of vegetables. There’s also no added sugar and no artificial additives.

Vegan, Organic Men’s Once Daily Whole Food Multivitamin – No Synthetic Binders, No Fillers
By: mykind Organics
A Better Alternative
It’s rather challenging to find good whole food multivitamins; this trend has yet to really catch on in the supplement industry. Whole food vitamins are a response to synthetic vitamins. It is generally correct to assume that real, whole foods are best when it comes to delivering nutrients to your body, so makers of whole food supplements try to work with principle. It seems the jury is still out on this, but, personally, I prefer them over the synthetic options.

100% Plant-sourced, Organic, Gold Standard Whole Food Vitamin D Supplement
By: Nature’s Plus
A Better Alternative
Vitamin D is incredibly important to overall health and well-being. US News (Health) talks about Vitamin D supplements as being one of the top 6 most important supplements to incorporate into your daily routine. Vitamin D has been linked to helping protect against certain kinds of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. This Vitamin D supplement is plant-based and made from whole foods. It’s a great option if you’re a vegan.

Vegan, Fruit, Flax & Nuts Oatmeal, Organic Oats
By: Dr. McDougall’s
A Better Alternative
Call me old-fashioned, but I love to start my day with oatmeal. I have a few oatmeal options that I vacillate between, but, for this kit, I wanted to pick one that is relatively quick and easy to make, and eat on-the-go. This one is made with organic oats, flax, and whole fruits and nuts.
RATING
100% Organic, Fair Trade, Shade Grown Coffee Beans
By: Cafe Mam
A Better Alternative
People who know me know I’m not a huge coffee drinker–I often prefer tea–but when I discovered this brand, I felt the need to share it. It’s a small company that makes Fair Trade, organic, shade grown coffee. Their coffee beans are incredibly high-quality, and are grown using sustainable practices. They’re certainly a company worth supporting. Try it out; let me know what you think in the comments below.

View Our Research Standards.
Each of our six badges has its own unique set of metrics. These are some of the qualities (i.e., metrics) we try to look into when assessing a product and brand with respect to each of our badges:
Socially Responsible (purple triangle):
+ Does the company abide by Fair Trade Practices, or is it Fair Trade Certified;
+ Is there a commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR);
+ Is the company philanthropic – does it donate goods or services to environmental or humanitarian efforts;
+ Does the brand promote corporate transparency;
+ Are there any community engagement initiatives set in place;
+ Does the company communicate healthy and equitable working conditions along the supply chain;
+ Does the brand abide by fair and honorable employment values;
+ Is there a disclosure of sourcing methods, and are such materials or ingredients sourced responsibly;
+ Does the brand have a cause-driven mission towards human & environmental health & well-being.
*We do not conduct in-person audits. Oftentimes we will consult the language and standards set by third-party certifications and seals such as Fair Trade Certified, B Corp Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Green America Certified, etc. We will, however, do independent research with respect to certain badges and utilize peer-reviewed articles. Also, please note that according to the Journal of Economics and the EPA, “social responsibility” does include practices and commitments that support environmental health and well-being; thus, the qualities of this badge may overlap with our other badges.
Eco-Conscious (red triangle):
+ Does the company practice sustainable modes of production;
+ Is the product composed of materials and/or ingredients that are biodegradable;
+ Are the materials and/or ingredients compostable;
+ Does the company have carbon reduction or mitigation strategies set in place;
+ Do the involved materials and/or ingredients have a relatively low environmentally impact;
+ Does the company utilize reduce or reuse principles in their facilities;
+ Does the company use renewable or efficient energy technologies in the production of their good(s);
+ Are there practices in place that work to maintain ecosystem biodiversity;
+ Is environmental stewardship a part of their business model.
*We aim to be transparent and objective when it comes to labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”, and reject “greenwashing”. According to marketing and advertising standards set by The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Green Guides, it is most accurate to communicate not that a product is necessarily “good” for the environment, but that it is a “better environmental alternative”. This is the message we aim to communicate in labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”.
Quality Materials/Ingredients (M/I) (green triangle):
+ Does the product contain organic or certified organic m/i;
+ Is there a significant degree of m/i ‘naturalness’;
+ Is the product non-GMO or Verified Non-GMO;
+ Are the m/i biodegradable;
+ Are the m/i compostable;
+ Do the m/i raise little to no concern in terms of m/i toxicity;
+ Is the product treated with harsh chemicals;
+ Is there a healthy ratio of synthetic or artificial m/i to natural m/i;
*For select “Pantry” products, we may look into health and nutritional value.
*For select products, we may consult reviews to assess m/i effectiveness.
*Generally, these are the ingredients that we try to steer clear of: Acesulfame-K (acesulfame potassium), Acetylated ester of mono- and diglycerides, Ammonium chloride, Antibiotics, Artificial colors (Synthetic and FD&C Certified), Artificial flavors, Aspartame, Astaxanthin, Azodicarbonamide, Bentonite, Benzoates, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), Bisulfites, Bromated flour, Brominated vegetable oil (BVO), Calcium bromate, Calcium disodium, EDTA, Calcium peroxide, Calcium propionate, Calcium stearoyl-2-lactylate, Calcium sorbate, Caprocaprylobehenin Carmine, DATEM (diacetyl tartaric and fatty acid esters of mono and diglycerides), Diglycerides (acceptable in supplements), Dimethylpolysiloxane, Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DSS), Disodium calcium EDTA, Disodium dihydrogen, Disodium guanylate (GMP), Disodium succinate, Dimethylamylamine (DMAA)… Read more at Free From 101.
