A Conscious Consumer
It’s so important to support Fair Trade companies. Fair Trade companies span the consumer industry, and make everything from clothing, jewelry, accessories, decor, toys, beauty products and so much more.
When a product is Fair Trade it means that it has met certain standards related to ethical sourcing and fair exchange values. Fair Trade companies bring consumer goods from smaller design and artisan communities to the global marketplace. In bringing the creations of these local artisans to the global market, Fair Trade companies allow for a larger consumer and distribution potential. They compensate their partnered artisans through establishing fair wage standards and give them a portion of the proceeds. In supporting the work of Fair Trade companies and buying their goods, you help to empower those local artisans via financial empowerment.
In this curated kit, you’ll find some of my favorite handmade, Fair Trade and well designed African baskets, made from natural fibers. They feature stunning and beautiful patterns, colors, and, since they’re handmade, each one is unique. They’re lovely.

Virtually all of the baskets offered by Overseas Connection are hand-woven by villagers in Africa, using natural, locally available materials. Fair Trade, Handmade / Hand-Woven Baskets (Natural Environmentally Friendly Materials, Local & Ethically Sourced, West Africa)
By: Baskets of Africa
A Conscious Alternative
Baskets of Africa is another wonderful, Fair Trade company that helps to support families and design communities in Africa. In the Bolgatanga area of Ghana, these baskets are traditionally used for carrying goods to and from the market. Weavers in the region use the abundant Veta vera grass, a natural plant material, to weave these incredibly hardy, useful baskets. I love the colors used this basket. This basket is great to use as a picnic basket, or as a unique, beautiful storage container. It also makes for a lovely and meaningful gift.
Fair Trade, Handmade / Hand-Woven Baskets (Natural Environmentally Friendly Materials, Local & Ethically Sourced, West Africa)
By: Baskets of Africa
A Conscious Alternative
This is another Fair Trade basket by Baskets of Africa, handmade and sourced from Ghana, West Africa. This basket has a different weave and pattern than the above one — it doesn’t follow the typical round shape and looks more like a handbag. It’s made from the same plant fiber material and dyed with natural dyes.
Fair Trade, Handmade / Hand-Woven Baskets (Natural Environmentally Friendly Materials, Local & Ethically Sourced, Rural Senegal)
By: Connected Fair Trade Products
A Conscious Alternative
This Fair Trade basket is handmade by the Wolof women in rural Senegal, West Africa. I like the simple design of this one. It’s different from the other ones, as it’s not made with a handle and has a flatter, wider bottom. It makes for a beautiful waste bin or a basket for storage. It stands at just about a foot tall.
Fair Trade, Handmade / Hand-Woven Nesting Baskets Storage Set (Natural Environmentally Friendly Materials, Local & Ethically Sourced, Africa)
By: Connected Fair Trade Products
A Conscious Alternative
This set of baskets is also by Connected Fair Trade Products, and is ethically sourced from West Africa. This is one of the only basket sets I could find. It’s made from a similar plant fiber as the baskets above. Because it comes in a set of three different size baskets, it makes for the perfect piece of decor or storage bin, as you can organize different things around your home in a uniform look. You can put magazines in one and toys and shoes in the other two.
The biggest one stands at just about a foot tall and little more than a foot wide, while the smallest one is about half a foot tall and nine inches wide.
