What is a “superfood”?! It’s been associated with raw cacao, goji and acai berries, coconut products, and even honey. Intuitively, we can imagine it refers to foods that have a number of positive health benefits. But, is there a formal definition? On this, interestingly enough, we found the most helpful resource to be from the European Food Information Council: “Indeed, the science in this area has demonstrated that certain components of foods and drinks may be particularly good for you…[but] it is unrealistic to expect a narrow range of ‘superfoods’ to significantly improve our well-being.” In short, there is no definition, and it is our whole diet that is most important when it comes to improving our health — not a single food.
