An Interview with Joined In Life
(Makers of Charitable & Sustainable Tees – Made Responsibly)
My name is Jane Wimpenny, and I’m the Director of Joined in Life CIC.
What inspired the creation of your company, and when did it start?
I was looking for eco-fashion choices when I realized my options were limited. That’s when I had the idea to start my own brand with a charitable angle. I wanted our customers to still be able to look fashionable, while maintaining a low carbon footprint. I created Joined in Life in 2015 and we were awarded our Community Interest Company status in March 2016.
What is your brand’s mission, and what causes drive you and your team?
We want to encourage people to help protect the world’s environment and support the people in it. Through the sale of organic/recycled products and 10% donation from each sale we want to show that every single purchase can have a life changing impact for a child and the world they live in. The biggest motivation for us is knowing that we are changing children’s lives for the better. We want to show people that such a small thing can have a life changing impact. We know that every t-shirt sale takes us closer to making a real difference to the world.
How is your brand socially responsible?
Our priority isn’t about making money, though we do understand the importance of a profitable business to achieve out mission. Our main goal is about how many children we can help & increasing awareness for environmental issues. We try to keep the carbon footprint of the company to an absolute minimum by using organic and recycled supplies in the manufacturing of our clothing, packaging and office supplies.
What does your brand do to lower its ecological impact and/or promote environmental health and well-being?
We track all our supplies to ensure all elements of our products are eco-friendly. All equipment and stationery is eco-friendly. We use a shared office space to reduce our carbon footprint (reduced utility bills). We use our social media platforms to build awareness for eco and health issues for people and animals.
Does your company perform animal testing and/or use animal-based ingredients in your products? Why or why not?
Nope.
Where does your company make/manufacture your products, and why?
We source our ‘salvaged’ t-shirts from Continental clothing, they are then printed using water based inks in the UK before arriving at Joined in Life CIC Headquarters. Our suppliers have been chosen based on their eco-friendly practices.
Describe your design philosophy – how do you balance quality and affordability?
Our design philosophy is clean modern design and easy wearable fashion. We do our best to source the best materials at a great price to ensure low production costs.
Tell us a little about the ingredients/materials you use. Generally, why did you pick them over other options?
Our t-shirts are 100% made from recycled supplies (60% recycled organic cotton and 40% recycled polyester) We decided to launch with recycled t-shirts rather than organic cotton, because they had a soft & premium feel to them.
What are the next steps for your company?
We are looking to add a new series of t-shirts and broaden our product base with accessories. As well as developing our cic status by hosting a number of community events.
How do you view the future of conscious consumption?
The future is looking positive, people are becoming more aware. Today we are all interested in where our products are sourced and how they were made. Businesses are changing and becoming more conscious minded.
As a parting sentiment, if you could only use one word to describe your brand ethos – what would it be?
Tomorrow
Have a question? I’ll answer.
