Kit by: Jake Madoff
Co-Founder | Agreeable & Co.

Upon request, here’s my bath and shower essentials kit. I’ve used quite a few bath and shower products throughout my life, but for this kit, I tried to pick mostly under-the-radar products, but threw in a few popular brands as well, like Avalon Organics and Yes To. Of course, in addition to each of these products being a favorite of mine, the products and/or brands reflect the environmental and social values that we here at Agreeable & Co. deem valuable.

Each product incorporates some degree of sustainability — considering that most of these products are body washes, hair care products, or facial formulas, biodegradability was one of the primary indicators in assessing how eco-friendly or sustainable a product was/is. In this way, products composed of organic and natural ingredients were ranked highly. To support small businesses and artisans in the USA, I also wanted to include a few of my favorite bath and shower products that I’ve used on Etsy.

I hope you enjoy! Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below!

Organic, Plant-Based & Sustainable Essentials

Homemade, All-Natural, Biodegradable Cedar Wood & Essential Oils Soap Bar
By: BlackFrizzleSoap

A Better Alternative

Cedar wood soap bars are my go-to soap bars. The last one I purchased I got from a local farmers market, and this one from this Etsy shop is nearly identical. In additional to cedar wood oil, it has coconut oil (which has antibacterial properties) and raw sugar (which helps to exfoliate the skin). An added ingredient that this soap bar has that the other one didn’t is cocoa powder — which I imagine pairs nicely with the overall natural, deep earthly scent.

Organic, Fair Trade, Cruelty-Free Moisturizing Shampoo (Argan & Orange)
By: Avalon Organics

A Better Alternative

I’ve talked about how great Avalon Organics is in other posts, but they’re worth mentioning again. The company itself communicates a three-tier commitment to sustainability, healthy (i.e., not-toxic) ingredients, and social responsibility — and is often involved in environmental stewardship and charity work. My favorite shampoo of theirs is the organic argan oil and sweet orange (the one to the left). I really enjoy the smell and my hair always feels a bit fuller after. My hair also never feels dry after. They have many more varieties if you’re not keen on orange.

All Natural Healthy Hair Repair Conditioner – Free of Parabens, Petroleum, SLS
By: Yes To Blueberries

A Better Alternative

I discovered this company only recently. All their products are at least 95% natural (i.e., containing “ingredients…that come from, or are made from a renewable resource found in nature (flora and mineral)”), and none contain parabens, phthalates, or any other chemical ingredients that raises a health concern. Yes To is also a “cruelty-free” certified member of the Leaping Bunny Program. Their conditioners and shampoos come in several varieties and each focus on a particular natural ingredient — I like their blueberry healthy hair repair one, but the carrot one is also excellent.

Eco-Friendly, Recycled Material Loofah (Recyclable)
By: Impresa

A Better Alternative

Not to get too personal here, but I prefer to wash with a loofah rather than a towel or my hand. In my opinion, loofahs are a bit better at removing dry skin and exfoliating. Per usual, I had trouble finding an eco-friendly version of a loofah — they usually weren’t recyclable and broke down too easily. I’ve had these for a while now and they’ve kept their shape. This company in particular crafts their loofahs with recycled plastic material and designs them to be recycled with your mixed plastic/glass recyclables. I know this probably sounds trivial, but every design innovation counts.

Handmade, Organic Facial Cleanser (Charcoal & Argan)
By: SpaGoddess

A Better Alternative

I wash my face about three times a week. Before finding this product, when I would wash my face with a facial cleanser, my skin would immediately feel dry and stiff. I also wasn’t that happy with a strong smell lingering on my face the rest of the day. This product was recommended to me by a friend and I’ve been using and recommending it ever since (so cliche). But seriously, it’s very good; it has charcoal and argan oil which each have a number of skin health benefits, it never leaves my face feeling try, and has a soft, unobtrusive smell.

Organic, 100% Natural Castile Soap Body Wash – Biodegradable, Chemical-Free
By: Shadow Lake

A Better Alternative

Castile soap is pretty much a staple bath and shower product now for health-nuts and environmental stewards (like myself). With the growth of Dr. Bronner’s, which is now in just about every supermarket I walk into, I think castile soap is becoming a very popular, eco-friendly alternative. Don’t get me wrong, I love Dr. Bronner’s as a company and their castile soap body wash, and often alternate between this one and their brand, but I figured I would share this one wish you all as it’s a bit under-the-radar. I found it at a health food store one day and I seriously enjoyed the smell and feel ever since. It’s also made with only 5 simple, natural ingredients.

100% Organic Cotton Towels – Low-Impact Dyes, Locally Harvested Cotton
By: Holy Lamb Organics

A Better Alternative

To round up this kit, I wanted to share a company that make zero-waste, sustainable bath towels and bathroom accessories. Holy Lamb Organics crafts 100% organic cotton towels with cotton sourced locally, right near their facility in Texas. They also don’t use conventional dyes, which produce harmful runoff, but opt for low-impact, vegetable dyes. I’ve also never been one for bright, fluorescent towels. I prefer the earthy tones. So, if you’re in the market for a new set of bath towels, I’d go for these.

View Our Research Standards.

Each of our six badges has its own unique set of metrics. These are some of the qualities (i.e., metrics) we try to look into when assessing a product and brand with respect to each of our badges:

AGREEABLE CO FLAT ICONS 3__NEW

Socially Responsible (purple triangle):
+ Does the company abide by Fair Trade Practices, or is it Fair Trade Certified;
+ Is there a commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR);
+ Is the company philanthropic – does it donate goods or services to environmental or humanitarian efforts;
+ Does the brand promote corporate transparency;
+ Are there any community engagement initiatives set in place;
+ Does the company communicate healthy and equitable working conditions along the supply chain;
+ Does the brand abide by fair and honorable employment values;
+ Is there a disclosure of sourcing methods, and are such materials or ingredients sourced responsibly;
+ Does the brand have a cause-driven mission towards human & environmental health & well-being.
*We do not conduct in-person audits. Oftentimes we will consult the language and standards set by third-party certifications and seals such as Fair Trade Certified, B Corp Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Green America Certified, etc. We will, however, do independent research with respect to certain badges and utilize peer-reviewed articles. Also, please note that according to the Journal of Economics and the EPA, “social responsibility” does include practices and commitments that support environmental health and well-being; thus, the qualities of this badge may overlap with our other badges.

Eco-Conscious (red triangle):
+ Does the company practice sustainable modes of production;
+ Is the product composed of materials and/or ingredients that are biodegradable;
+ Are the materials and/or ingredients compostable;
+ Does the company have carbon reduction or mitigation strategies set in place;
+ Do the involved materials and/or ingredients have a relatively low environmentally impact;
+ Does the company utilize reduce or reuse principles in their facilities;
+ Does the company use renewable or efficient energy technologies in the production of their good(s);
+ Are there practices in place that work to maintain ecosystem biodiversity;
+ Is environmental stewardship a part of their business model.
*We aim to be transparent and objective when it comes to labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”, and reject “greenwashing”. According to marketing and advertising standards set by The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Green Guides, it is most accurate to communicate not that a product is necessarily “good” for the environment, but that it is a “better environmental alternative”. This is the message we aim to communicate in labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”.

Quality Materials/Ingredients (M/I) (green triangle):
+ Does the product contain organic or certified organic m/i;
+ Is there a significant degree of m/i ‘naturalness’;
+ Is the product non-GMO or Verified Non-GMO;
+ Are the m/i biodegradable;
+ Are the m/i compostable;
+ Do the m/i raise little to no concern in terms of m/i toxicity;
+ Is the product treated with harsh chemicals;
+ Is there a healthy ratio of synthetic or artificial m/i to natural m/i;
*For select “Pantry” products, we may look into health and nutritional value.
*For select products, we may consult reviews to assess m/i effectiveness.
*Generally, these are the ingredients that we try to steer clear of: Acesulfame-K (acesulfame potassium), Acetylated ester of mono- and diglycerides, Ammonium chloride, Antibiotics, Artificial colors (Synthetic and FD&C Certified), Artificial flavors, Aspartame, Astaxanthin, Azodicarbonamide, Bentonite, Benzoates, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), Bisulfites, Bromated flour, Brominated vegetable oil (BVO), Calcium bromate, Calcium disodium, EDTA, Calcium peroxide, Calcium propionate, Calcium stearoyl-2-lactylate, Calcium sorbate, Caprocaprylobehenin Carmine, DATEM (diacetyl tartaric and fatty acid esters of mono and diglycerides), Diglycerides (acceptable in supplements), Dimethylpolysiloxane, Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DSS), Disodium calcium EDTA, Disodium dihydrogen, Disodium guanylate (GMP), Disodium succinate, Dimethylamylamine (DMAA)… Read more at Free From 101.
